First place: On Connecticut’s Chaffinch Island, Lisa Cuchara of Hamden, Conn., caught this Osprey bringing flounder to his mate and three vocal chicks. “I have never seen an Osprey with a flounder before,” she said. Cuchara used a Canon EOS 40D and 500mm f/4 lens to create the photo.
Second place: On the Mississippi River along the Illinois and Iowa border, Jaromir Penicka of Lemont, Ill., saw two Bald Eagles fighting over a fish on a cold February day. He used a Canon EOS 40D, 400mm f/2.8 lens and 1.4x extender.
Third place: Greg Tucker of Los Angeles considers himself fortunate to have captured two female Rufous Hummingbirds feeding from a flower. He used a Nikon D200 and 70-180mm Nikkor lens to capture their wings in symmetry.
