First place: Jerry Jourdan of Wyandotte, Mich., imitated a Virginia Rail’s call and lured the bird out of the cattails onto the lily pads. The bird flew to a bank close to Jourdan before returning to the cattails. Jourdan used a Zeiss 85T*FL spotting scope and 20-60x eyepiece, a Nikon Coolpix P500 and a homemade adaptor.
Second place: Dead cotton trees provide a roosting spot for Bald Eagles during winter months. Larry Peterson of Centerville, Utah, used a Nikon 4300 and a Swarovski HD 80 spotting scope with a 20-60x eyepiece to capture this eagle after it landed in a tree.
Third place: Steve Berliner of Milwaukie, Ore., captured this Northern Harrier before it began eating an American Coot on Sauvie Island near Portland, Ore. He used a Sony Cybershot W-200 with a Kowa TSN-824 spotting scope and a 32x eyepiece.
