First place: While photographing from a blind in a friend’s back yard, Jim Arnold of Redding, Calif., photographed this Nuttall’s Woodpecker eating sunflower seeds. Arnold used a Nikon D300 and Nikkor 500mm f/4 lens.
Second place: For four years, Northern Flickers have nested in the back yard of Christine Haines’ home in Spokane, Wash. With this picture, she noticed the adult closing its eyes while feeding the young, whose beak is very close to its parent’s eye. Haines used a Canon EOS 20D and 100-400mm lens.
Third place: Lois Miller of Port Orford, Ore., enjoyed watching this Rufous Hummingbird sipping sugar water as a bright male Rufous buzzed all around it. Miller used a Canon EOS 40D and 500mm f/4 IS lens.
