2008 WildBird Photo Contest: Amateur Category

The first-place winner earned a Genesis44 8.5x44 binocular (shown) with a 5.2mm exit pupil and an objective lens nearly 10 percent brighter than a 42mm lens. The second-place winner earned a BD42 8x42 binocular; the third-place winner, a BD32 8x32 binocular.

First place: Chris Livingston of Chelmsford, Mass., used lots of patience to create this image of a Bohemian Waxwing in Newburyport, Mass. He used a Canon EOS 40D, 120-300 f/2.8 Sigma lens and 1.4x extender.
Second place: Burrowing Owls live in residential areas in Cape Coral, Fla. Laura Bryg of Sarasota, Fla., used a bean bag on her car window to steady her 300mm f/2.8 lens and 2x extender on her Canon EOS 30D.
Third place: Greg Tucker of Los Angeles used a mealworm to lure a Greater Roadrunner from a friend’s back yard near Tucson, Ariz., to the top of a saguaro cactus. Tucker used a Nikon D200 and 80-400mm lens.
