The Porcine Pet of the '90s

Prospective potbellied pig owners should proceed with caution.

Despite much early confusion about their needs and adult size, potbellied pigs continue to intrigue and delight many happy owners. Many of the positive traits you may have heard about potbellied pigs are true. These smart, clean creatures love the companionship of humans. The behavioral problems associated with potbellied pigs are usually due to human error. It is easy to underestimate the intelligence of a potbellied pig, and this oversight will create trouble every time. If you have difficulty disciplining children, you will be in over your head with a potbellied pig. Their uncanny intelligence is one of their finer traits as well as the most challenging.

In the wild, dogs and cats are predators, whereas pigs are prey. This helps to explain the vast differences in the behavior of potbellied pigs and their perception of everyday situations. Behavior problems arise when a pig feels fear or distrust, and oftentimes its intelligence enables it to reason that the best defense is a good offense. Many pig owners become frustrated and give up on their "stubborn" pig, without realizing that they are dealing with a very unique and intuitive animal. True animal lovers are successful with potbellied pigs because they are able to step back and enjoy learning about the pig from the pig's perspective.
