Crabby Considerations

When purchasing hermit crabs, keep these important considerations in mind. Obviously you want a crab that has all of its appendages. Although they can regenerate broken or missing limbs when they molt, it stresses their system and could lead to a more difficult molt. The lack of full appendages may make them less active, too.

If the crabs you want to buy aren't moving, you can facilitate activity by gently blowing into their shells or misting them with a spray bottle of water. Even if they don't move at this point, it doesn't necessarily mean that they won't be active. Since hermit crabs are nocturnal, you shouldn't expect them to be always active during the day, although they very often can be.

Land hermit crabs provide their owners with a variety of activities to enjoy watching, such as climbing, jumping, walking, eating and drinking, burying, molting, egg laying, and changing shells. Their variety of activities--along with the ability to handle, tame and even hand-feed them--makes land hermit crabs an ideal pet.
