Preparing Your Hedgehog's Home
There are a variety of cages suitable for this small, neat pet. Dwarf rabbit cages 18 inches by 24 inches or larger with 6-inch-deep solid trays work well for hedgehogs. The depth of the tray helps keep the bedding in the cage when the hedgehog is on its nocturnal rounds. Aquariums, 20 gallons or larger, with secure screen tops also work well. Many breeders use medium-sized travel kennels with nestboxes attached to the outside, tiered cages of various configurations or large plastic sweater boxes with fitted, secure screen tops. Select the largest cage that will fit into your available space.
Place 2 to 3 inches of bedding in the bottom of the cage. Suitable beddings include pine or aspen shavings and commercial beddings made of corn cob, pelleted grass or recycled paper or paper by-products. In a pinch, even shredded newspaper can be used.
If there is room in the cage, supply a small litter pan 2/3 full of plain, unscented clay cat litter. Hedgehogs are neat, and most will learn to use a litter pan. Just be warned that your pet will probably take a messy dust bath each time new litter is supplied! They seem to enjoy rolling around in a fresh pan of litter or sand.
