Feeding Your Gerbil

The bulk of your pet gerbils' diet should come from grains and seeds, such as wheat, barley, oats, maize, sunflower seeds and peanuts. You can supplement the diet with pelleted foods for rabbits or rats, or broken dog biscuits. Many pet stores now offer commerical preparations of pellets and seeds specifically formulated for gerbils and hamsters.

Gerbils also appreciate munching fruits and vegetables such as pears, apples, cabbage, celery, lettuce, parsley, spinach, kale and carrots. Make sure you wash all produce before offering it to your pets. Don't expect your gerbils to eat all their food at once, however; they may tuck some food in their burrow as they would in the wild.

Even though wild gerbils can make do with little or no water, it's best to provide your pets with free access to the wet stuff. A gravity-fed water bottle works better than a bowl, because gerbils most likely will dirty a bowl of water with food and bedding.
