Helpful Dormouse Hints
When purchasing your dormice, try to buy from a source with several choices. Pay close attention to how the animals are handled. If the person helping you wears gloves or grabs the animal by the tail, chances are you won't be getting a pet-quality animal and should consider buying elsewhere. If the handler moves slowly and gently traps the animal between his or her hands while speaking and petting it softly, then you've found someone who knows what they're doing and you can concentrate on selecting your pets.
Look for animals with bright eyes that move with ease and do not show discharge from their eyes, nose or anus. Avoid animals with missing tails. This can happen because of rough handling, causing the animal to become untrusting of humans. Dormice have different personalities, so choose those that act friendly and enjoy being scratched behind the ears gently with your thumb and index finger. If there are several to choose from, it is best to select companions at the same time.
