Dormouse
Tonight's Dinner Special Is...
The African dormouse's diet consists of grains, seeds, nuts, fruits, insects, eggs and small vertebrates. With the help of commercially packaged pet foods and some table foods, this diet is easy to maintain. Be sure to provide fresh water in a clean water bottle daily. Never allow the bottle to become empty or to sit with stagnant water. Chew sticks should be given to help prevent incisors from growing too long.
Every day, leave a bowl of hamster mix in the cage. Add to this a small amount of raw peanuts and sunflower seeds. This mix should be made available for the dormice at all times. In the evening, offer in a separate bowl about 1 to 2 teaspoons of sliced fruits and vegetables. Fresh, frozen or canned foods are acceptable. Give this mix two to three times a week.
On the other evenings, offer chopped boiled egg, crickets or mealworms. Crickets and mealworms can be purchased at most pet stores. Never feed wild-caught insects; these insects might be contaminated with pesticides that could prove fatal to your pet. Most pet stores with large birds also sell vanilla-colored biscuits, usually sold in bulk. Feed one biscuit once or twice a week. These biscuits can be fed dry or soaked in 1/4 cup of apple or white grape juice. Remove all remaining wet food in the morning to avoid spoilage. Wash and dry the dish in preparation for the next meal.
