Cavies as Pets

The animal known as a guinea pig actually is a cavy, pronounced "kay-vee." Cavies are gentle and shy by nature. In their native South American habitats, they live in deep grass, which they traverse through a series of tunnels. Cavies have a single coat of hair--not fur--that comes in a variety of lengths and textures, depending on the breed. They are vegetarians, thriving on a simple diet of pellets and fresh fruits and vegetables.

A mature cavy weighs about 2 pounds. The animal is of good size and temperament for children, and many adults find them charming, too. The cavy also is a great pet for working owners, being content to scamper about its cage eating and sleeping during the day, then welcoming you with squeaks and whistles when you come home.

Cavies are intelligent and quickly learn to recognize sounds--such as the refrigerator door opening when you're getting them a treat. They will respond to your voice with whistles for greetings and in anticipation of feeding times. They do not usually climb or try to escape, so they are easy to cage. Cavies are not inclined to bite, but they will nibble anything near their mouths, so children should be taught not to poke their fingers through the cage or into the cavy's face.

Because cavies live an average of five years, if you are not committed to daily feeding and weekly cage cleaning for that long, think twice about obtaining one. It is difficult to find a good home for the adult cavy you enjoyed watching grow up from a cute baby. Most people want to start with a baby, too. However, adult cavies are calmer and easier to handle, and are the best choice if you have small children.

If you enjoy a clean, responsive pet that you can hold in your hands; if you are committed to having that animal as a part of your life for about five years; or if you are looking for a rewarding animal hobby; chances are, cavies could be the critter for you.
