Cuddling with a Cavy

The correct way to handle a cavy is with both hands--put one over the shoulders and the other under the hindquarters before lifting the cavy. Because very young children do not have hands big enough to do this, they should only be allowed to pet the cavy and should not attempt to pick it up. Care must be taken not to drop a cavy or let it fall as even short falls can easily fracture a its legs or back. A cavy does not have the ability to "cling" that smaller rodents do.

Cavies are great pets for children age 10 and older. By this age, most children can learn to provide food and water and clean the cage, as well as safely handle the pet. However, an adult should oversee the pet's care on a daily basis and be prepared to take over if the novelty wears off. If the adult does not want the cavy and is not willing to take over its care, it is better to obtain a pet that will be of lasting interest to the adults in the family.

Children under 10 should not be expected to contribute significantly to the cavy's care. They must also be carefully supervised in handling the animal. A cavy has sharp toenails that must be trimmed regularly so the nails do not scratch people or get caught and injure the pet. The younger the child, the more carefully he or she must be supervised.
