Rabbit Rations

When selecting a diet for your pet rabbit, be sure to consider these factors.

Proper nutrition for your pet rabbit involves more than just crunchy carrots. A proper, well-balanced diet can add several years to the life span of your new pet. The basic element of your rabbit's diet is the commercial rabbit pellet you will find in most local feed dealers or discount pet supply stores. The pellet is a neat, compact form of feed, which normally carries all the basic ingredients the rabbit needs to meet its nutritional requirements.

Of first consideration and prime importance is the freshness of the feed. The feed should have a pleasing aroma. The smell you do not want to find when you open a bag of rabbit feed is a musty smell. You also do not want to find a complete lack of smell when opening the feed bag. A good rule to remember when buying pellets for your rabbit is: If it doesn't smell good to you, it probably won't appeal to your rabbit.

All feed bags should carry a date of manufacture somewhere on the bag. Generally, you will find fresher feed at your local feed dealer than you will at a discount store or pet dealer.
