Safety First

A small animal's home must be safe. This sounds simple enough, but surprisingly, some owners disregard it. Make sure the environment is free of sharp objects, edges or places in which a small limb might get caught. The cage also must be free of toxic substances such as paint or fumes. Small animals are sensitive creatures and must be protected against potential dangers. Think carefully about the cage design and what you plan to put in it.

Housing also must be secure. Make sure your small pet cannot escape through an ill-fitting lid or a gap in cage wire, or gnaw its way through the cage floor. Keep the pet inside its habitat to protect it from dangers that might be lurking in the home, such as the cat, electrical cords or poisons. This doesn't mean you never can take a small animal out of its home, however. Outings are permissible, as long as you carefully supervise them.
