Hutch Housing

Hutch-style housing, often made of wire with a wood frame, is a common choice for rabbits and sometimes cavies. You can purchase ready-made hutches, designed to keep pets outdoors, at pet supply stores or make one yourself. All-wire hutches are good choices for rabbits that, like their rodent friends, have a propensity to chew. Many hutches also have all-wire bottoms so droppings and urine can fall through to the ground below.

However, constant contact with an all-wire cage can cause injuries to a small animal's tender feet. To prevent this, many owners place wooden "walkways" or plastic mats in the cage or hutch to give the animal an area where it can get off the wire. The trick to knowing where to place the walkway is knowing where the rabbit eliminates, which is usually in the same place. Place the walkway away from the animal's elimination spot.
