Rabbit Housing Do's and Don'ts
Do clean a rabbit's cage frequently. Cages with drop pans should be cleaned daily and bedding changed about every other day. Outdoor hutches should be cleaned with a wire brush and hose (weather permitting) once a week, and droppings raked up as needed.
Don't be tempted to use deodorizers in place of routine cleaning.
Do use bedding that is safe for rabbits. Stay away from chemically treated products.
Don't use products to clean the cage that could be potentially harmful to the rabbit. Ask your vet to suggest a cleaning product, and follow directions carefully.
Do take care to place the cage away from other animals that may frighten or harm the rabbit.
Don't place an outdoor hutch in direct sunlight. Rabbits are especially sensitive to heat and heatstroke can result.
Do make sure the cage is secure and free from sharp edges or anything else that may hurt the rabbit.
Don't keep rabbits in cages not intended for them.
Do plan ahead if you intend to build a rabbit cage. Use only safe materials, be careful of paints, sharp wire or nails, and don't skimp on materials.
