What is a Specialist?

What does it mean to be a veterinary "specialist"? Besides having a great interest in the subject, a veterinary specialist must undergo a rigorous training and testing program before receiving his or her certification. This includes an approved residency program of study (usually two or three years long) after finishing veterinary school and publishing scientific papers that have been reviewed by other certified specialists in the same field.

Finally, he or she must take additional examinations that are more detailed and more difficult than the veterinary board exams that are required for a general veterinary license in each state. Just because someone believes that he or she knows a lot about one or two types of animals does not give the veterinarian the right to take on the title of specialist.
