Meats, Legumes and Insects
Feed these with caution.
Meat products can be an excellent source of nutrition (well cooked, of course). However, the feeding of these products may change the normal bacterial flora on the birds involved to that of potential problematic microbes. The key is moderation and removal of waste as soon as possible. Many aviary collections, both here and especially abroad, use this source of nutrition with no apparent problems.
All the beans are excellent as part of the diet, though it is ideal to soak and prepare them as we would for ourselves. Also, it is better to use a good mixture than just one kind.
While insects are generally not considered, studies in the wild suggest that they are a part of the diet. Smaller finches, for example, often require them to successfully breed.
